California Sunshine

Why is California allowed to be so pleasantly sunny with the mildest of temperatures, while the sunlight out here is so intense we feel like we'll shrivel up and wilt like a little flower? At least we got a taste of the pleasant weather this weekend, but you can bet I loaded up on an assortment of frozen goodies on my way home from work today in a desperate search for relief from the heat out here.

Next week is Brian's 30th birthday, and Dylan coordinated with Sandra for us to surprise him at his birthday dinner on Saturday night. I was all set to hunker down for the summer, but Dylan was able to play the points game and get us flights, hotel, and car for next to nothing with hardly any notice. You can't say no to that. So he scooped me up at work on Friday night, and off we went to catch a flight into Burbank.

On Saturday we were on our own, since we weren't planning to surprise Brian until that night. We hit the LA Zoo then grabbed some lunch at a quirky coffee shop. After the late night and all the walking at the zoo, my body was ready to stop moving by the afternoon. But having checked out of the hotel and not quite ready to bombard Brian and Sandra's place, I had nowhere to go. The beach would have been a nice detour, but it was much too far away. So we laid a beach towel down in a public park amongst some outdoor-loving Californians, and I took a nap on the ground. It was the least comfortable I've ever been trying to catch some rest, but it did a world of good to prep me for the big night.

Brian was most definitely surprised, and also a little bit confused, to see us. The dinner, at Barbrix, was fantastic. We had a lot of fun with their family and friends and ate way too much. On Sunday, Brian, Sandra, Dylan, and I walked to breakfast, then hung out and watched the US Open before heading back to the airport to catch our (delayed) flight.

I'm so glad we were able to escape the heat and surprise Dylan's best buddy for his birthday, but I'm pretty sure I won't be traveling much for a while. Traveling is just a hassle, and it's always been exhausting to hit the airport directly from work only to get home late on Sunday night and get up early to go back to work on Monday. But it's more difficult now. Plus, though Dylan would tell you otherwise to spare my feelings, I couldn't have been a very fun travel companion. "I'm so tired. I can't get comfortable. I need to sleep. I can't sleep. I'm thirsty. I need to pee. I'm thirsty. I need to pee. Please help me up, I can't move. I can't get comfortable. I'm tired. I'm thirsty. I need to pee."

Yeah, I think it's best if I just stay put for a while. Plus, the doctor reported that while I'm in the clear with the gestational diabetes, I am in fact anemic. I will take anemia over diabetes any day of the week, but it might explain why I'm such a bum. I'm off to take an iron pill and get my laundry started. I hope you had a great weekend and beginning to the week!
