The airplane went into the shop, and we took off for the mountains. It was time to break in the fancy new skis that Dylan had set me up with for Christmas, and I was so excited. I took a "bye" year on skiing for the 2013-2014 season mostly because I had a tiny new human depending on me for life and complicating things a lot and also because Arizona had only a dusting of snow. I don't often take a bye year...it may have been the first time ever, and it didn't make me happy. So, I was more than ready to hit the slopes.
After a hectic and stressful work day on Monday, we headed to the cabin in a white Volvo packed to the gills. Three people, two dogs, ski equipment, a kennel, pack n play, booster seat, etc, etc, etc. It took all weekend for me to get ahead on laundry and gather all of our belongings for a two-day getaway, but it was well worth it. On Tuesday, my dad, Dylan, and I hit the slopes while Gavin and my mom hung out at the cabin. The snow left something to be desired, but it was warm and sunny, and we had so much fun. My new skis were awesome, and we mounted Dylan's GoPro to his ski pole and had a blast making videos. Maybe some day we'll compile something short and non-boring from all of our video outtakes.

Today we had a lazy morning and ate french toast for breakfast then headed outside to put Gavin on a sled. He usually enjoys adventure, but he was overtired and extremely cranky, so it wasn't as huge a hit as we'd hoped. So, we packed it up, and after a pretty significant struggle, the white Volvo finally made it out of the steep, snowy driveway. Gavin did well on the way home, and after doing a double take at the thermometer and seeing 78 degrees, I decided that I had a couple extra hours in my schedule to go for a bike ride. I had scrambled to be as prepared as possible for the next two work days before leaving for our trip because I thought I'd have absolutely no time upon arriving home from the cabin to unpack or do anything. I was wrong, and I'm so glad!

Thanks so much to my parents for putting us up, feeding us, and babysitting Gavin. Boy are we lucky! After remaining on the home front for quite a while, I was so glad to escape, even if it was just for a couple of days. Skiing and a bike ride...most definitely a successful second weekend!
