Family Fun Day

Today was the day that Dylan was supposed to leave on a trip...and then he didn't...and then half way through the day he got called to report to the airport ASAP for a different trip...and then that cancelled. And so, we had an entire day of family fun. Yay for happy endings.

We started out braving the frigid cold temperatures (haha) at the train park. It was a smashing success. Two train rides, two carousel rides and one trip to the playground later, and we found ourselves chowing down on Chipotle. (E. Coli scare, what?) Gavin was a perfect gentleman at lunch and during our family shopping trip to Target.

Dylan never feeds him yogurt for obvious reasons, but sometimes I have high hopes and try it. I should probably give it up for a while...

He said, "Drink hot coffee like Daddy."

At night, we got together with family to wish Pierce a happy first birthday! Gavin loves seeing his cousins, and we always have a great time when we can wrangle everyone together. We had pizza, sang happy birthday, and watched Pierce enjoy his cupcake. He's so stinkin' cute.

And now the part where I'm looking for advice. Please skip if you're uninterested in toddler issues. Lately, I'm at a 25% success rate in getting Gavin to take a nap. When he does, it's only after he's been talking and fidgeting around in his crib for over an hour, and maybe after a diaper change or two. Something about nap makes him poo almost 100% of the time. That's all fine. Whatever. He's always super tired when he goes down, but then he gets a wild hair up his butt, and he's totally wired. Sometimes he peters out, but usually he does not. Lately, if he's really angry (usually he isn't) he'll get out of the crib, even though his mattress is all the way down to the carpet. I'm tired of planning my days around these naps that are so hit or miss. When you live where we do, you cannot just make several trips out in a day, and a nap at noon really complicates things. When he skips his naps completely he gets deliriously over tired really early, like at 5pm or so. Which is fine, if we never planned to do anything after 5pm. (Free time starting at 5:30? Sign me up!) But, we are relatively normal people, so that's not very realistic as an every day sort of thing.

Today I said forget it to planning our day around the nap. And we had a great day! Then Gavin started singing songs like a drunk person and saying "Hi cactus! Hi race car! Hi loader!" on the way home. It was hilarious, but it was also 2:30, and we knew he was super tired. We tried for the nap, and he got angry and climbed out of the crib. Okay, fine. But we also went to see our family later in the afternoon, where he usually has a great time playing with his cousins. This time, he wasn't very nice or cooperative, and he was in full tantrum mode by the time we got him home just after 6. It took both of us to pin him down and put on his pajamas, and even then, we almost gave it up. He was fast asleep in seconds. So, clearly he needs the nap. I'd be fine with it if he really didn't need it, since he'd go to bed a little earlier...but 5 or 5:30 is a little bit of a stretch. Unless I feed him a tranquilizer, I do not know how to make sure that the nap happens. The only time the situation is okay is if we head out around 4pm or so and he catches a quick nap in the car. Has anyone else ever encountered, and subsequently conquered, this problem? Do you think it is just a phase? It's been going on for more than a few weeks at this point. Okay, enough of the boring stuff, and thanks in advance for whatever you can offer. I'm not super stressed about it...it just is what it is, but it'd be nice to remedy the situation if possible.

Happy Wednesday, enjoy the rain and cool weather, and goodnight!
