It's been about a week (I think?) since Gavin has napped in our house. And at that time, it had probably been at least a week from the time before. He's not big on daytime sleep these days, but he needs it, which is readily apparent when he passes out in the car anytime we go somewhere in the afternoon or when he gets crazy and over-tired every night. But, we're rolling with it, and I'm extra thankful he picked today as his once weekly day to catch some Zzzz's around here.
We had to get groceries the other night, so we went to Fountain Hills and stopped at the lake while we were there. Gavin just sat right down with these girls and started telling them stories.
We though it was so cute when he wanted to crawl up in Dylan's lap, till we realized he just wanted to pick the "hot dog" out of his egg scramble.
A crowd of rambunctious cousins crawling all over the kid-magnet at my parents' house for family dinner the other night. Thanks for a yummy dinner, mom!
I'm not a fan of loud noise, but suddenly Gavin has taken to screaming when he's excited. Like really, really loudly. It's terrible. My mom had us over for my birthday dinner with the whole family the other night, and all the cousins got crazy, which really set him off. My eardrums are still recovering. Watch at your own risk, and I'd recommend plugging your ears.
Dylan departed early this morning, and we loaded up the family to take him to the airport (the big airport), which is not how we usually do things. But, he is headed to the East Coast for training for a week, and the logistics of it all just fell into place. While we were out in Phoenix, Gavin and I stopped at the zoo. Luckily we showed up at 8:30 before it was even open to the public. (Members only from 8-9!) By the time we left at 11, the place was busier than Disneyland. They were directing traffic in the parking lot and a huge line of cars was waiting to get in. I could hardly get my stroller to the exit. It was nice to see that people were using their day off to get out with their kids, but I'm not big on crowds and chaos.
Anyway, we had a great time and enjoyed the chilly morning with a cup of hot chocolate. Most of which ended up on Gavin's shirt. Oh well. He went to the monkey display...his favorite, saw a few animals, including the orangutan climbing around with her baby hanging on, and did the petting zoo and playground. For some reason, he really, really loves watching the ducks and whatever else there is to see at a lake or pond, so we took some time to do that, which was fine with me. Nobody else's kid thought the ducks were cool, and it gave us a break from the crowd.
Rode a tractor...
Hugged a few goats...
Played on fake animals...
Looked at the water...
And that's about it!
And now, we are home for the afternoon. I have a lot of catching up to do. When Dylan departs on a trip, it's like the OCD in me comes alive. The house is in shambles when he's here for a long stretch because he's not what you'd call a tidy person. It's a small price to pay to have him home for a couple weeks, though. If we are looking for the positive in any situation, we can be glad about the ESPN-less, sports talk radio-less, bacon-less time that is upon us. As soon as I left Gavin's room for his nap today, I tidied up the kitchen, scrubbed all the dried up food off the surfaces, and got this place looking halfway orderly. We will miss Dylan a lot, but in this moment right now, I am okay with taking two minutes to enjoy a very quiet house by myself. #introvert
We are thankful for so much every day, but today we are appreciating the veterans and their service to our country!
