On reflection of the events that occurred overnight, I’m a swirl of thoughts and emotions. I can’t not put this out there. I'm seriously neglecting my children while writing this, but I have a fire burning in my belly. Anyway, I can’t know anything to be true, but I do believe some things with conviction.
First, this is not a doomsday scenario. Everyone should stop being dramatic.
Donald Trump is all the things that people said he is- misogynistic, xenophobic, racist, etc. Any opponent who is not these things would have been a better choice as leader of the free world. But let’s keep it into perspective. Our government is a system of checks and balances. He won’t go with his own (kind of small-haha) two hands and upend everything that has been important to America for a very long time.
In case you need a good dose of perspective, see what Tim Urban has to say. He is brilliant and my answer to the question "Who is the one famous person that you would wish to meet once in your life?" Can we even call him famous? Probably not, but he's still my pick.
Mr. Trump isn’t that smart. He used the word “bigly” as if it actually meant something. But he’s not wrong about everything, and that includes the things he said about the media. Yes, I love the local news and the Today show a lot, but I know that the media is biased and spoon feeds the American public what they want us to hear. I thought Hillary had it in the bag, and I think a lot of people felt that way. However, the American people have voted, this is a democracy, and they want what they want. I kind of wish I had seen the media begin to scramble as Trump won more and more key states last night. Dylan said that Brian Williams on MSNBC was the best. I'll have to YouTube it. I went to bed after Trump won Ohio, and I had a very sinking feeling that the unthinkable was about to happen...even though we were sure the media was holding off on the Florida results to stir up hype. (Not the case.) When a subtle noise woke me up at 2:30, I checked the election results and didn't fall back to sleep until 4:30. I should have never looked.
Another thing about Trump and his supporters? I don't think it's a bad thing that they want disrupt the status quo. A Hillary win would have kept things status quo, for better or for worse. In this case, it probably would have been for better over a Trump win. Whether Donald can shake up the institution of our government and deliver on his promise to make America great again is the big question. I have serious doubts he can execute this, or at least in a good way, but as Barack Obama told Matt Lauer, "Anything is possible." Our government is not perfect, and it needs disrupting. I don't think he's the right guy for the job, but I also don't think Hillary was the perfect option either, and I know I'm in good company here.
With a feminist streak that runs deep, I was glad about Hillary's nomination. But I would never really say that #imwithher. For the sake of full disclosure, I voted for Gary Johnson. And truthfully, I was Feeling the Bern for kind of a long time. But maybe this could be a push to get the Libertarian Party out there for the next election? (Gary- Don’t go anywhere!!) And, nobody said it better than Tim on the issue of a female president.
A little part of me died when America did not elect their first female president, but in due time, I suppose. Michelle Obama? Okay! Or maybe Ellen for President. I do love her.
Anyway, Tim, please do go on.
[On the issue of the dramatics proclaiming, "RIP America!]
Politicians and celebrities everywhere are responding to the election results with messages of hope and a call for unity. I like what Bernie had to say the best.
As the final kick in the pants, when the results for Arizona were finally announced, long after Hillary had conceded the election, we stuck with red. I was hopeful that we were going to swing blue for this one important and controversial election. This state can be a real embarrassment sometimes.
However, let's not brush over the good news that did come from last night. We can finally say adios to Sheriff Joe, and the minimum wage increase passed. Plenty of able-bodied and able-minded people are out there not working, so let's allow the ones who are to at least make an almost livable wage.
I'm not an emotional person by nature, but I have feelings that run very deep about this, and I could go on forever. I'll stop now, but not without some humor from The Onion.
Sorry, I just cannot stop!
Well, it is what it is. In a few short days these blog posts will be all about the normal and boring things that my family and me do because we will have carried on with our lives, just like everybody else.
In the words of Ellen, "Be kind to one another."
