Family Stats

In the past, I used to get a little more creative with the blog. I don't know if I have the brainpower, nor the time, for that right now, but I thought maybe I could mix it up just a bit and inform the world of some of the things going on with each of us.

Dylan:

He likes to stay up late and wear the super-dooper headphones that he received as a Christmas gift from me to play XBox really loudly. Or watch Breaking Bad really loudly. G and I never know the difference. It's almost like those headphones were a gift to myself. Sometimes he watches documentaries about things that would give me nightmares. If I find a wet bathing suit in our bathroom in the morning, I also know that he's made a trip across the street to get in the hot tub. Most of his fun is had after the baby and I are asleep or when we're at work, for obvious reasons. He also finds time to watch football, as well as talk about football with all his friends, and he's so excited that his Seattle Seahawks are going to the Superbowl. He's also excited about the Phoenix Open this week and has several friends making the trip out here for this event. He hasn't been working as much lately, which means he's on baby duty from 5am to 6am while I get ready for work, much to my relief and his dismay. He really has a lot going on and continues to enjoy a prolific social life. Sometimes that makes me jealous, but he takes pretty good care of us as long as he doesn't have to leave town, so I shouldn't complain too much. He's a really terrific dad and takes care of G when I am overwhelmed and even when I'm not.

Gavin:

He is five months old, and his clothes are 9 or 12 month size because he is enormous. He's a cranky and extremely hungry baby, but when he's happy, he's super, super cute. I suppose if I grew five inches and doubled my weight in four months, I'd probably be hungry and cranky, too. He's doing great overall, and if you set him on the floor, he'll roll all over the place. He LOVES to stand on his feet (while obviously being supported), and he's getting good at sitting but doesn't do it on his own yet. He used to hate the car seat, but his new seat has mostly cured this. In my opinion, buying that seat was the best money I've spent in months. His favorite dog is Ramona, and she is pretty fond of him, too.

G has a few full-proof activities that keep him happy, or at least content: 1) Riding in the wagon, 2) Being worn in the Bjorn (and now the Ergo, too!), and 3) Riding in the stroller if the weather's nice, the sun's not in his face, and his view is not blocked. The best babysitter right now is the exersaucer because of all the sensory over-stimulation. He stays entertained in that thing long enough for me to pee and possibly put a dish in the dishwasher until he whines. He keeps me very busy.

His appetite has remained strong since his first hour of life. Because of his enormity, the doctor recommended feeding him solid food at four months. I make all of his food, and so far he enjoys peas, green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, pears, avocado, and butternut squash. He loves bananas, but they cause poo of the explosive nature, so they've been cut out of his diet for now. He hates to nap, but he loves going to bed early...like 6pm. His nighttime bath is his favorite. He had us fooled into thinking he was a great nighttime sleeper when he gave us a couple 12-hour stretches at 2 months old. But he wakes up once or twice at different times every night now. I'm so tired.

He loves going to Dawn's house while I'm at work because he enjoys watching the children run and play (according to Dawn.) It doesn't surprise me. He's incredibly observant. He's also a stinker to her sometimes, and neither of us can really pinpoint what makes this little man so cranky, but we're hopeful that we'll crack the mystery soon. Dawn thinks that he's frustrated because he wants to jump up and run around with the kids and he can't. She thinks he's smart and that's what causes his frustration. I'll choose to believe that! (Whatever makes me feel better, right?) Usually when I pick him up he is in different clothes because somehow he manages to have a diaper blow-out at her house almost every time he's there. Poor Dawn. She is just the best.

Other than that, he loves pulling hair and necklaces, chewing on his fist or anything he can get his hands on, and he plays with all kinds of toys. He has a touch of eczema on his cheeks and a smile that will melt your heart. He's not very social, and he cries at most people who say hi to him. Never in my life has anything demanded so much of my attention and my energy and my everything. It makes me so glad I waited to have kids, but so glad I have him as my kid. I love him to a million pieces and think he is just the most precious thing in the universe.

So much to do in the Exersaucer.

More interested in what the dog is doing than eating his pears.

Happy baby at the food truck festival.

A new toy to keep him busy!

Me:

I'm the most boring of them all. I'm going to work three days a week, and for the first time in my life I actually don't mind being at work. It's refreshing to be able to focus on a task for more than 30 seconds. And the drive is nice too, now that G doesn't cry in the car too often. My social life has taken a real hit. I think that'll happen when you go to sleep at 7:30. It was certainly more prosperous before I went back to work, but I think going back was the right decision. I also get time to clear my head when I can get in the gym. Thank goodness for the nursery there! The weather has been so nice lately, however, that I've chosen to get most of my exercise outside by jogging or hiking. I took my first jog 4 & 1/2 months after giving birth, and I'm so relieved that that injured nerve and bum knee are things of the past. I miss cooking but still manage to do a little bit of it. Tonight was butternut squash soup. Yum! I also miss reading. I read about four pages of The DaVinci Code about two weeks ago, and that's about it. So basically I miss doing a lot of things, but overall I'm doing great! (Also, I miss Chipotle and a lot of food and treats.) Starbucks House Blend K-cups and a continuous flow of adrenaline are what keep my motor running, and I just pray that my adrenal gland can keep up with this for just a tad longer. We've had some fun over the last couple weeks in this warm winter weather, and I'm looking forward to some fun days ahead. Life is good!

Now that we're all up to speed, have a great rest of your week!
