A Different Kind of Surprise

In Dylan's line of work, we endure surprises...of the disappointing variety...all too often. He's usually gone every weekend. But yesterday while at work, I received the fun and fresh news that the second leg of his trip had cancelled and that a 6-day trip suddenly became a 3-day trip, which would have him at home for the weekend.

He made it home late last night, but not before spending a couple of days hiking, kayaking, and biking in Idaho and Montana. (Sometimes I am a little jealous of his life, which I think is completely justifiable.) Which was great because he was able to hang out with Gavin during his typical 4:50am awake time while I caught up on some desperately needed sleep. Then we switched, and I hauled Gavin to the gym while Dylan went back to bed. And Gavin, again, proved to be a complete grump in the nursery and nearly got kicked out for the third time this month. I saw the lady approach my class and signal to me, so I put on my shoes, made two trips to the equipment room to put my stuff away, and hung up my mat so I could retrieve Gavin...about two minutes into my workout. But lo and behold, he had found peace in this time, and I was free to go back to class and disrupt everyone again while I hauled all the stuff back to my spot.

Upgraded to the big kids' table for lunch at Dawn's!

Big Lizard slide at the Carefree Desert Garden on Wednesday.

Hi, can I take your order?

Shenanigans in his playroom.

Usual snack time. We need a hose-off station.

His hair is so ridiculous, so I tried to comb it. It doesn't look any better.

Peter Piper to celebrate Cruz's birthday!

Causing a ruckus at the dinner table. The usual.

Found him in here. It was a real treat trying to get him out when his foot got stuck.

Destroying an apple. His favorite.

So now, we are just going to show Dylan what weekends are like around here. Maybe a shopping trip and the splash pad to burn off steam this afternoon? Church tomorrow morning, and now since Dylan is home to watch G, I'll be able to make it to Meredith's baby shower in the afternoon. Low key, as usual, and we are happy to have the real man of the house home with us. (I'm not so sure he's thrilled about the pre-5am wake-up calls and the lack of outdoor adventures and beautiful weather, but I think he kind of missed us and is happy to be here, too.)
