System Overdrive

I was so set to take it easy this week after all the fun of last week. That is, until my parents offered to drive G and me up and back from the cabin so that my dad and I could ski on Tuesday. I busted my butt during the second half of the Super Bowl and missed the heartbreaking play by the Seahawks to do what it takes to get myself and my child ready for the work day on Monday and packed for two nights including ski equipment...and think about the dogs, too. Somehow I made it out the door in plenty of time in the morning and even clocked into work a few minutes early.

We rolled up to my parents some time after 4, transferred our stuff to the truck, and off we went. Gavin wasn't a total delight on the way up, but nothing that an iPad couldn't cure. Dylan came home a day early, but he missed the truck to the cabin by just a few hours. He considered meeting us up there, but in the end he was just too tired. I'm pretty sure he wasn't very bummed about a couple nights alone in the house. My dad and I enjoyed a warm and sunny day at Sunrise, and the snow was much, much better than our last time on the mountain. I think we were two of just a handful of people there...you can't beat skiing on a Tuesday. Gavin had a great day with Nonna until I arrived home and he woke up from his nap and went into crank mode. On Wednesday morning we ate, cleaned up, and headed back home. This time, Gavin really was a pure delight in the car. It was incredible. Almost three hours and no need to bring out the iPad to calm him.

The view from the top. Sunrise was as un-crowded as it's ever been.

Hitting the park at Torreon

Getting his fruit fix and giving me an unpleasant face...I think because I accidentally ordered him girls pajamas and then made him wear them instead of just returning them. Either that, or I take his picture too much.

I had enough time to unpack and hit the trail on my bike on Wednesday afternoon, and we were happy to be reunited with Dylan! The fun didn't stop there. On Thursday, the plan was to celebrate Dylan's birthday early, and I was going to pick up food from the restaurant of his choosing on my way home. Instead, Dylan purchased a grill that looks like a humongous egg and creates a lot of smoke while he was out and about that day, so he invited our family and friends in the neighborhood over for BBQ chicken. He may have fixed his own birthday dinner, but at least I was prepared with spice cake, his favorite. The kids had fun, the chicken was good...and the guacamole was better. I always look like a tired, disheveled mess after work, but I was more than happy to celebrate with the birthday boy in his favorite way...with lots of people.

I am pleased to have this quiet night at home and a weekend with only a handful of things on the agenda. We've had a 12-foot rolled up rug in our hallway for three weeks because we haven't had time to take the bed apart to put the rug beneath it, and we've had a huge chunk of unpainted drywall in the family room where we hung our new mantle for almost as long. (The mantle is a story all on its own, maybe for another time.) Our fridge is overflowing with old leftovers and desperately needs to be cleaned, and most importantly, I have still not watched the Parenthood finale. I'd say a week of housekeeping is in order, and that is a-OK with me.
