Just G & Me

It's been a most delightful weekend. Dylan departed on a trip early Friday, due to return Monday night. On Friday night, after putting G to bed, I indulged in one of my most favorite things. A little TV and an early bedtime. Usually nights are about fixing lunches, preparing for the next day, folding the laundry, washing the dishes, emptying the dishwasher, etc. until I collapse. But not that night. It had been a long day at work, my head hurt, and it was time to chill.

On Saturday, we took our poor dogs on a walk for the first time in forever! We headed out after Gavin's nap and received word that Dylan's trip had been re-routed and he was due to overnight in Phoenix. He rented a car from Sky Harbor and met us in town by 3pm to share in the smoothie that I had ordered us and which Gavin was mostly hogging. I had already set up a park date with Anne, who was also single-parenting for the weekend, so D joined us and provided an extra set of hands to keep the kids in check. D picked up Pei Wei on the way home, found a bottle of white wine in the back fridge, and we enjoyed dinner on the patio.

Rules do not apply on Saturday morning.

"Help," he said.

Easy morning on the patio.

I can't even blame this one on his dad.

Gavin saw Dylan when we walked out of the nursery at the gym and yelled "Dada!" more excitedly than I'd ever heard from him.

On Sunday morning, Dylan had just enough time to fix us waffles before it was time to go for the day. We both pulled out of the garage together, and he headed back to the airport while G and I made our way to Station 7 in Phoenix. We met up with Jess and Hazel to see Kevin on shift. What a treat it was! Gavin was in his element and repeated "truck" over and over. The station had a fire truck and an ambulance, and we were treated to a ride in the fire truck, as well as a lights and siren show and a fire hose demonstration. I don't know who was more excited...Gavin or me. He was feeling a little shy around all the firefighters, but I'm still pretty confident that he loved the whole experience. At the end of our visit, Hazel announced "Chow Time!" over the loudspeaker, and the firefighters let us join us in their brunch of french toast and eggs. It was a really awesome experience. Thanks so much, Jess, Kev, and Hazel!

I'm pretty sure that if he could form complete sentences he'd say "I want to be a firefighter when I grow up."

We wrapped up the afternoon taking it easy since G woke up cranky from his nap and had been battling a runny nose for a while. The dogs were treated to their second walk of the weekend, and Gavin is currently pouring potting soil all over himself (but thankfully not eating it), while I type this post on our patio. The only thing disturbing to me about how dirty and messy he gets is that it seems we will be going through a lot of shoes at this rate. His current ones are not very old and already completely nasty...
