The weather was still better than normal on Sunday, so G and I took our dogs for a long walk. Dylan made it home midday, and we had a nice afternoon at home, and shockingly, a home-cooked meal for dinner. On Monday, things turned south. Gavin woke up feeling a little cranky and warm. We had plans to hit the lake with our family for Memorial Day, so I proceeded with my gym plans and Target run for a life jacket. But when I got home and found Gavin sprawled out on Dylan, I knew that things were not okay. We had to skip the lake. And then I spent the remainder of the day with Gavin sprawled out on me. As is the case with most toddlers, Gavin only holds still in the following situations: while strapped in his car seat, sometimes while eating, and while sleeping. So, when he was pretty uninterested in any type of movement, I knew we had to take it easy.

I was relieved when Gavin woke up feeling much better on Tuesday. He had an 8am physical therapy appointment, so we went and it was fine. He was happy and playful, but when he woke up from his nap, fever struck again. We watched a couple more hours of PAW Patrol and YouTube tractor and monster truck videos, and since G was talking quite a bit and acting okay, I decided it was time to get us out of the house. We met up with Dylan after his day trip, as well as my parents, for a quick bite to eat.
In this time, G's condition declined rapidly. Dylan got him home quickly, and he was in his crib by the time I made it home just a few minutes behind them. I snuck in and took his temperature with the ear thermometer, which is notoriously inaccurate. It read 105.1, so I was obviously freaked out. I managed to get some Tylenol down him then called the on-call service at the pediatrician's office. Being that in the last year or so our family has been no stranger to nighttime visits to the ER at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea, we began formulating our hospital plan. By the time I had spoken to the triage nurse, we figured that if the Tylenol didn't drop the temp by a few degrees, then off we'd go. So I snuck back in, put the thermometer in his ear, and got a reading of 102. I was so relieved and spent the next hour laying with him and comforting him until he started saying "night night," which was his code for "put me in my crib and leave me alone, I'm exhausted." We checked on him a couple times through the night, and he woke up feeling much better.
We are skipping swim lessons today, though, and have another day of being lazy around the house ahead of us. I tend to go stir crazy after more than just one day like this, so I'll head out later for the gym and happy hour to preserve my sanity while Dylan takes the reins at home. Seeing Gavin so miserable was very upsetting. I felt so terrible for him and sad that we had to scrap our fun plans. I'd call for a re-do on the holiday weekend if I could, but I'm pretty sure the world doesn't work that way. I don't know that we're out of the woods yet, but fingers crossed we have a full day of no fever!
