This Year at The Open

Well, another fun-filled weekend of golf, etc. is now behind us. We had perfect weather and made some fun memories, but in my old age, it leaves me feeling a little tired. I'm happy about our quiet life, and while it's always worth it to have weekends like this, I'm always okay with getting back to normal, too.

Our grand plan was to go to the golf tournament on Thursday. I requested the day off work before the Open was on anybody else's radar...and I'm glad I thought ahead. We knew we'd have childcare in place, and that's all we needed to know to pick a day to go. As luck would have it, my parents came out on Wednesday and Thursday, which freed them up to (willingly) take our kids on Friday...scoring us a bonus day! Additionally, Dylan's friend had tickets to the 17 Skybox on Wednesday, so he got a head start on things while the boys and I did our Wednesday thing.

Why do Wednesdays always suck. They ALWAYS suck lately. (I know, self-fulfilling prophecy.)

So we try to make them suck a little less.

We met some gym friends for a playdate to break up our day. This little guy climbed to the top of the playground and then bombed head-first down the slide without even thinking about it. Over and over again.

Both days at the tournament were perfect. We got an early start and stayed most of the day, over-paying for food and beer and loving every minute of it. We walked a LOT, and drank a lot and had fun with friends and family. From my parents, to the Kennedys, to Aunt Angie and Bernz, to Ted and Destinee, and even a few minutes to chat with the Meabons...we had no shortage of company. It was awesome! It seems like every year at the Open is either cold and rainy or pleasant but just so sunny that it's too blazing hot to sit on the course and watch any golf. This year was the perfect combination of warm and overcast. It couldn't have been better. I may have even napped on a hill for a few minutes while everyone else watched a few groups come through at the #12 green. Hooray for getting some QT with my guy, hooray for the day off work, and hooray for parents who were available and willing to take our boys on Friday.

Back at home with the boys on Friday. Dylan must have a very comfortable lap because they sat there a long time.

My Saturday morning gym and breakfast date.

He hammered an entire plate of pancakes like it was nobody's business. How nice it must be to just be a kid who can plow into pancakes with no remorse.

I tried to get a selfie with this one, too, but he just wanted to show off his new chapstick.

And then, we signed my parents up for babysitting again on Saturday night. We tried to go out for sushi, but we got turned away because there were too many of us. So, we landed at Ajo Al's, which was not bad news for me. After dinner, with tickets in our hand, Dylan and I made our way to the Bird's Nest...with my brother in the back of the car attempting to buy a last minute ticket. Nobody had any doubt that he would succeed, and of course, he did. When we got into the tent, the opening act was still playing. Steve Aoki...ever heard of him? Me neither. He's a Calvin Harris-like DJ guy who put on an EDM show. (Do you know what EDM is? I didn't either. We're officially old.)

This Aoki guy...holy crap. I'm not a person who enjoys any of the following: 1) loud noise, 2) lots of people, especially drunk people that keep bumping into me, and 3) staying up late. I was willing to look past all that to see Blink 182, because who doesn't want to re-live their 20-years-ago life every now and then? But EDM was like a gigantic dose of sensory overload. It went on and on and on and on. The final act, however, was something I'm glad that I witnessed. This freakin' guy chucked sheet cake after sheet cake at people in the audience. And they LOVED it. WTF. He probably threw a dozen cakes at people. It was both astonishing and appalling, but so engaging. I was just glad we were far from the cake zone.

So, that was an experience that left me wanting to run away so, so badly, but instead, I just got some fresh air and dragged Dylan with me. After the first song or two by Blink, my mind was righted and we went back inside. It was still late, loud, and crowded, but it was a show I could really appreciate. They sounded GOOD, and it was fun. And with that, we've officially wrapped The Phoenix Open 2017. It was awesome, and we've learned some things for next year...mostly that we'll try to make Wednesday and Thursday our days at the tournament.

Now that the Super Bowl is upon, that means...absolutely nothing for me. Except that maybe I'll head out to get errands done during the game at places that are typically crowded on the weekends. Dylan will be enjoying his final hurrah with his buddies before wrapping up the weekend. We've got a big birthday celebration on our horizon and additionally a dinner with friends for me on another night, so I guess we're not immediately slowing things down, but in due time. I suppose I still have a little party left in me!

In other uplifting news, we have our shower back and functioning after 12 days of repairs. The stone still needs to be sealed, so it's not really done, and I probably shouldn't be using it, but I've moved back in and nobody can stop me. The playroom is back together, and our house feels like home again. Next up, time to take everything off the walls and get rid of bunch of crap to prep for a fresh coat of interior paint. And then...it's time to list this place! #getmeoutofhere
