Rolling With It

I had just dropped Gavin at Dawn's and was cruising the aisles at the Chaparral Wal-Mart (not a place I tend to frequent, but it's a total gold mine for awesome costumes for Patti's party coming up this weekend), when I received a text from Dylan. It was a very timely text because I had just finished picking out his outfit...a t-shirt that read "I like beer" and some camo gym shorts. I had the perfect sandals in mind, too. He told me that the boss had his dates wrong and in fact he would be coming home Sunday morning, not Saturday morning. Which meant he'd have to skip out on the chance to eat various awful Little Debbie snacks, marshmallow fluff and Stouffer's mac and cheese and drink King Cobra. But even worse, I'd have to hang his outfit back up in the Men's Department. I told him what I'd picked out for him, and he was super bummed. Obviously.

So, I carried on and picked out pieces for my own glorious outfit. No matter what, I will look smoking hot in my combination of fluorescent colors, leopard print and a pregnant belly. Nobody's too disappointed because after years of stuff like this happening, it's just not worth our time and energy to get upset. Kind of like last week when we were supposed to be in San Diego for a few days but spent one night at the JW in Phoenix instead when the plans fell through. I was mostly relieved to not pack up this family for another trip. Sure, it would be my preference for Dylan to join me at the party, but I don't think he's made it to one of Patti's parties in a few years, so this isn't my first solo rodeo. I'm just happy to be getting out on a Saturday night, and I don't think spending an extra day in Aspen will be too rough on Dylan.

So, he'll come home Sunday, we'll squeeze in as much QT as possible for a few days before he flies again, and that will be that. This is the life we signed up for, and it's mostly a good life, and I'm thankful for it. That being said, just because we both knew what we were getting into doesn't mean we're not allowed to think that it totally, totally sucks sometimes. Because sometimes it totally, totally sucks when your plans get ruined or he has to miss something important.

As far as what we've been up to this week? Nothing real Earth shattering. I don't have a single photo to share. But we continue to run around more than ever before. I was excited to reunite with Kris and enjoy an iced tea on the patio at AJs the other day. I fit in a happy hour at Modern Margarita last night, and I've kept busy with a couple classes. And, we've got a fun weekend ahead of us!

A real highlight of my week happened today. I had just read on Nora's blog about how she loves to check the mail, even though she's not a big subscription or catalog person, because it's so much fun to get that occasional card or invitation. Recently she received a surprise card and gift from her mother-in-law, and it made her so happy. I almost commented that I'm the exact opposite of her. I don't like checking the mail because of all the bills. A few hours later, after heading home from a long day, I stopped to check the mail. There was indeed a bill or two, but then I found a little gem amongst the junk. A quick note from Nora, just to say hello, and on the very stationery that had been the topic of our conversation just days earlier. What a way to brighten a girl's day. Thanks, N!
